Roofing Contractors Insurance

Roofing Contractors Insurance

Roofing is not “handyman with a taller ladder” on an insurance application. Roofers nationwide — residential reroof, commercial TPO, tear-off, solar-adjacent deck work — need general liability, workers’ compensation, and certificates that match the subcontract. Lions & Coventry Insurance Services places roofing contractors insurance across the U.S. Sacramento metro is a local example, not the scope limit. Brokerage notes below — not a quote and not legal advice.

General liability for roofers

GL is what owners and GCs ask for first: bodily injury and property damage arising from your operations, plus the additional-insured and primary/noncontributory wording buried in the subcontract. Roofing work brings height, open roofs, torch or adhesive exposures, and completed-operations questions after the last shingle is nailed. Bring the real mix — percent residential vs commercial, new vs reroof, any hot work — before someone stamps “handyman” on the app. A policy that looks cheap until the first cert reject is not cheap.

Workers compensation class codes — caution

Workers compensation for roofers is driven by classification and payroll, not by the logo on the truck. Misclassified payroll (especially helpers, tear-off labor, or dual-wage splits that do not match the books) is how mid-term audits get expensive. Dual-wage thresholds for construction classes moved again with the September 1, 2026 WCIRB package; roofing is one of the trades where the hourly split matters. Read our field note on the WCIRB pure premium and dual-wage changes before you reprice labor burdens. We will not promise a class code the carrier will not write — tell us the real job mix.

Certificates, additional insured, and COI friction

A certificate of insurance is evidence on a date, not a rewrite of the policy. GCs still want additional insured for ongoing and completed operations, waiver of subrogation, and primary/noncontributory language that matches the exhibit. Wrong form numbers or edition dates are a common reject. Send the contract exhibit with the holder name and job address; when the policy already supports the wording, we treat a GC holding payment over a cert as a same-day problem when we can. Deeper certificate notes live on our Construction insurance page and the certificates guide linked from the construction hub.

CSLB context (bond is not GL)

Active California contractors still need the CSLB contractor license bond path current — a surety instrument for licensing, not a substitute for general liability or workers compensation. Bond amount and form rules live with CSLB; confirm your classification (C-39 roofing and any related classes) and whether employees trigger WC filing requirements. We place insurance and coordinate surety conversations; we do not replace your license counsel or CSLB’s own checklists.

Commercial auto and tools (brief)

Roofing crews still need vehicles that carry ladders, tear-off debris, and materials to the site. Commercial auto liability — and sometimes hired/non-owned — sits next to GL when a GC or owner asks who is on the road. Tools and equipment floaters matter when trailers and specialty gear leave the shop overnight. We place those lines when the schedule and drivers match what underwriters will write; we do not pretend a personal auto policy covers the dump trailer full of tear-off.

What to bring when you call

License classification (including C-39), entity name matching the CSLB file, three-to-five year loss runs if you have them, estimated payroll by class, percent of work that is residential vs commercial, any torch or hot-work percentage, and the subcontract insurance exhibit that is holding up a start date. Local notes live on our construction insurance page; statewide WCIRB context is on the September 2026 post linked above.

FAQ

What insurance do roofing contractors usually need?

Most GCs and owners ask for general liability, workers compensation when you have employees, and often commercial auto. Tools and equipment may need inland marine. Exact limits come from the contract exhibit.

Can you help with same-day certificates of insurance?

When the bound policy already supports the requested additional-insured or primary wording, we treat certificate requests as same-day problems when possible from Citrus Heights. New endorsements still need carrier turnaround.

Do roofing class codes matter for workers compensation?

Yes. Payroll coded incorrectly for roofing versus lighter trade work creates audit surprises. Bring classification and payroll estimates when you request a quote.

How a roofing contractor starts a quote and COI path

Short education path for roofers (often CSLB C-39 and related classes) who need a licensed producer to start a quote or a certificate of insurance (COI) for a GC or owner. This is brokerage guidance only. Licensed producers close; this page does not bind coverage. No fake same-day bind for anyone. When a policy already supports the requested wording, certificate evidence from our Citrus Heights office is often same-day; new programs and endorsements still need carrier turnaround.

  1. Confirm the roofing operation. CSLB classification (often C-39), the legal entity name that matches the license, residential versus commercial mix, new versus reroof, and any torch or hot-work percentage.
  2. Assemble quote documents. Estimated payroll by class, three-to-five year loss runs if you have them, a driver and vehicle list for commercial auto, and tools or equipment that leave the shop.
  3. Attach the COI exhibit if a start is on hold. Certificate holder legal name and address, job address, and the exact additional insured, primary and noncontributory, and waiver language. Use the COI and Additional Insured checklist.
  4. Call or use the contact form. Call (916) 967-7715 or send the contact / quote form. A Lions & Coventry producer follows up. CDI License #0G22084. This page does not bind.
  5. Let a producer place what carriers will write. The producer reviews general liability, workers compensation, commercial auto, and related lines against the real job mix. No fake same-day bind. Underwriters and carriers still have to agree before coverage is in force.
