Quick answer: Landscapers usually need general liability, commercial auto for trucks and trailers, coverage for mowers and equipment, and workers' compensation for crews. Tree work, chemical application and snow removal each change your coverage, so tell your broker about every service you sell.
Lions & Coventry Insurance Services, established in 2009 and licensed in all 50 states (CA Lic. #0G22084), places landscaping contractors insurance nationwide. We work with lawn care and maintenance companies, design-build landscapers, hardscape and irrigation contractors, and commercial grounds crews.
Coverages landscapers usually need
- General liability for a rock thrown by a mower through a window, a cut irrigation or utility line, or a visitor who trips over your equipment.
- Commercial auto for crew trucks, dump trucks and the trailers you tow between properties. Tell the carrier about every trailer.
- Equipment coverage (inland marine) for mowers, skid steers, trimmers and blowers, including theft from a trailer or job site.
- Workers' compensation for injuries from mowers, chainsaws, heat and lifting. Seasonal and part-time crews count toward payroll.
- Pesticide and herbicide coverage if you apply chemicals, since many general liability policies limit or exclude it without an added endorsement.
Services that change your coverage
A carrier that writes lawn mowing may not write tree removal, and a policy written for maintenance may not cover hardscape, retaining walls or irrigation installation. Chemical application often requires a separate state applicator license and its own coverage. Snow and ice removal is underwritten as a separate exposure because slip-and-fall claims can come long after the storm. List every service you sell, including work you subcontract, so the policy matches your invoices.
Certificates landscapers get asked for
Property managers, HOAs, municipalities and commercial owners commonly require additional insured status, waiver of subrogation and specific auto limits before they sign a maintenance contract.

What drives your premium
We don't publish prices because every quote depends on underwriting. These are the main factors carriers weigh:
- Services offered, especially tree work, chemical application and snow removal
- Number of crews, trucks and trailers
- Payroll, seasonal staff and subcontractor costs
- Residential versus commercial and public-agency contracts
- Claims history and the limits your contracts require

How to get a landscaping contractors insurance quote
Five steps to prepare a landscaping contractor insurance submission for work anywhere in the U.S. This is brokerage guidance from Lions & Coventry Insurance Services, not legal advice and not a premium quote.
- List every service you sell — Write down each service on your invoices, such as mowing and maintenance, design-build, hardscape, irrigation, tree work, chemical application and snow and ice removal, including work you subcontract. A policy written for maintenance may not cover the rest, so leave nothing out.
- Gather your chemical application details — If you apply fertilizer, pesticide or herbicide, have your state applicator license information ready and describe what you apply and where. Many general liability policies limit or exclude chemical application unless coverage is added.
- Schedule your crews, trucks, trailers and equipment — List crew trucks, dump trucks and every trailer you tow, with drivers, and the mowers, skid steers and other equipment you want insured. Carriers ask about trailers and equipment theft, so include where equipment is stored overnight.
- Gather payroll, loss runs and contract requirements — Have annual payroll, including seasonal and part-time staff, subcontractor costs and revenue estimates ready, plus loss runs from your current or prior carriers. Collect the insurance requirements from property managers, HOAs, municipalities and commercial owners you work for.
- Send the submission to a licensed broker — Share the facts above with us. We compare available markets, explain whether a placement is admitted or surplus lines, and tell you which services need their own coverage. We do not quote a premium before underwriting reviews the risk.

Landscaping Contractors insurance FAQ
Does landscaping insurance cover tree removal?
Not always. Many landscaping policies limit or exclude tree trimming above a certain height or tree removal entirely. If you do tree work, tell us the height and type of work so we can place it with a carrier that covers it.
Are my mowers and trailers covered by my auto policy?
Your commercial auto policy covers liability for a trailer you tow, but physical damage to the trailer and the equipment on it usually needs to be listed or covered separately. Mowers and other equipment are typically covered under an inland marine or equipment policy.
Do I need separate coverage for applying pesticides or herbicides?
Often, yes. Many general liability policies restrict claims from chemical application. If you spray, ask for a policy or endorsement that covers it, and check your state's applicator licensing rules.
Does my policy cover snow removal?
Only if it is disclosed and accepted by the carrier. Snow and ice removal is often excluded or written separately because of slip-and-fall claims. If you plow or salt in winter, include it in your application.
How much does landscaping insurance cost?
We don't publish prices, because every landscaping quote depends on underwriting. Carriers look at the services you offer, such as mowing, hardscape, tree work, irrigation or chemical application, your payroll, the number of crews and vehicles, your claims history, the limits and endorsements your contracts require, and the states where you work. Request a quote or call (916) 967-7715 and a licensed producer will review your operations and shop the market.
Brokerage guidance, not legal advice. Coverage depends on the policy form, underwriting and carrier availability, and licensing and insurance rules vary by state.
