Quick answer: Solar installers usually need general liability with completed operations, workers' compensation, commercial auto, and coverage for panels and equipment before the system is complete. Roof work, battery storage and system design each change how carriers underwrite you, and financing companies and commercial owners often have their own certificate requirements.

Lions & Coventry Insurance Services, established in 2009 and licensed in all 50 states (CA Lic. #0G22084), places solar contractors insurance nationwide. We work with residential and commercial solar installers, EPC firms, battery storage installers and solar subcontractors.

Coverages solar contractors usually need

  • General liability with completed operations, for roof leaks from mounting penetrations, fire claims and property damage after a system is energized.
  • Workers' compensation for falls from roofs, electrical injuries and heat exposure. Roof work drives a lot of the underwriting.
  • Installation floater or builders risk for panels, inverters and racking in transit, in storage or on a job site before the system is accepted.
  • Commercial auto for trucks and trailers that carry panels and crews.
  • Contractors professional liability if you design systems, size them or produce engineering drawings, since general liability usually excludes professional errors.
  • Commercial umbrella for commercial and utility-scale contracts that require higher limits.

What carriers want to know about solar work

Underwriters ask for your split between residential and commercial work, roof-mounted and ground-mounted systems, the roof types you work on, whether you install battery storage, and whether your own crews or subcontractors do the roofing and electrical work. Licensing for solar and electrical work varies by state, so carriers may ask which licenses you hold in each state where you install. Companies that only sell systems and subcontract every installation are underwritten differently from installers.

Certificates solar contractors get asked for

Commercial owners, general contractors and solar financing or leasing companies often require additional insured status, primary and noncontributory wording, waiver of subrogation and specific limits. Some ask for completed operations coverage to stay in place for years after installation.

What drives your premium

We don't publish prices because every quote depends on underwriting. These are the main factors carriers weigh:

  • Residential, commercial or utility-scale work
  • Roof-mounted versus ground-mounted systems, and battery storage
  • Whether you design, sell, install or subcontract installation
  • Payroll and subcontractor costs
  • Claims history and the limits your contracts require

How to get a solar contractors insurance quote

Five steps to prepare a solar contractor insurance submission for installations anywhere in the U.S. This is brokerage guidance from Lions & Coventry Insurance Services, not legal advice and not a premium quote.

  1. Describe your solar projects and where you install — Estimate your split between residential, commercial and utility-scale work, and between roof-mounted and ground-mounted systems. List the states where you install. These answers decide which carriers will consider the account.
  2. Explain your roof, electrical and battery storage work — Say which roof types you work on, whether your own crews or subcontractors do the roofing and electrical work, and whether you install battery storage. Battery storage and roof penetrations change the fire, property and completed operations exposure, so carriers need them disclosed.
  3. Note any design work and the licenses you hold — Tell the carrier whether you design or size systems or produce engineering drawings, since that can call for contractors professional liability. List the solar and electrical licenses you hold in each state, because licensing rules vary by state.
  4. Gather payroll, loss runs and contract requirements — Have annual payroll, subcontractor costs and revenue estimates ready, plus loss runs from your current or prior carriers. Collect the insurance requirements from owners, general contractors and solar financing or leasing companies, including any request to keep completed operations coverage in place after installation.
  5. Send the submission to a licensed broker — Share the facts above with us. We compare available markets for liability, workers compensation, installation floater, auto, professional liability and umbrella, and explain whether a placement is admitted or surplus lines. We do not quote a premium before underwriting reviews the risk.

Solar Contractors insurance FAQ

Does general liability cover a roof leak after a solar installation?

It can cover resulting damage to the building and its contents, depending on your policy. It usually doesn't pay to fix your own faulty work. Some policies restrict roofing work, so confirm your policy covers roof penetrations before you install.

Are solar panels covered before the system is finished?

Not under general liability. Panels, inverters and racking in transit, in storage or on a job site can be covered by an installation floater or builders risk policy until the project is accepted.

Do solar contractors need professional liability?

If you design or size systems or provide engineering, yes, it is worth considering. General liability usually excludes claims that a design was wrong. A contractors professional liability policy can cover that gap.

Does solar contractor insurance cover battery storage installation?

Only if it is disclosed and accepted by the carrier. Battery storage changes the fire and property exposure, so include it in your application.

How much does solar contractor insurance cost?

We don't publish prices, because every solar contractor quote depends on underwriting. Carriers look at residential versus commercial and utility-scale work, roof-mounted versus ground-mounted systems, battery storage, whether you design or only install, your payroll and subcontractor costs, your claims history, the limits and endorsements your contracts require, and the states where you work. Request a quote or call (916) 967-7715 and a licensed producer will review your operations and shop the market.

Brokerage guidance, not legal advice. Coverage depends on the policy form, underwriting and carrier availability, and licensing and insurance rules vary by state.
