Specialty trade contractors insurance FAQ
What insurance do specialty trade contractors usually need in Sacramento and Loomis?
Most specialty trades need a package that can include general liability, workers compensation, commercial auto, and tools or inland marine, plus umbrellas or property when the operation warrants it. Concrete, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, roofing, painting, and site-prep each raise different jobsite and completed-operations questions, so the mix should match how you actually work—not a one-size brochure. Start with our construction insurance hub and trade pages such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing, and concrete. Availability and terms vary by market; we do not invent premiums or promise every endorsement.
Why did a general contractor reject my certificate of insurance even though I have coverage?
A certificate of insurance is evidence of insurance, not the policy and not an endorsement. GCs often reject a COI when the named insured or certificate holder is wrong, limits or dates miss the subcontract, additional-insured or waiver-of-subrogation wording is missing, or the exhibit asks for language the policy does not provide. Email the insurance exhibit, job address, and rejection note so we can check the request against the policy. Use our COI and additional-insured checklist and Sacramento construction insurance guidance. Brokerage information only—not legal advice.
Is a CSLB contractor license bond the same as general liability for specialty trades?
No. A CSLB license bond is a surety and licensing requirement; general liability is insurance that may respond to covered third-party bodily injury or property damage subject to the policy. The bond amount is not a GL limit, and a COI does not replace a bond filing. Confirm your classification and current filing needs with CSLB. See also our surety bonds overview. Guidance only—not a CSLB ruling.
How should specialty trades handle workers compensation class codes when crews do more than one type of work?
Workers compensation class codes and payroll should follow the work employees actually perform, with records that support what you report. Helpers, apprentices, prevailing-wage jobs, and mixed-trade crews can need careful review. Dual-wage and pure-premium planning notes (including the September 1, 2026 WCIRB updates) are planning context, not a guaranteed quote or a reason to reclassify without support. Keep time by job and duty, then review classifications with your broker before binding or at audit. Read our WCIRB pure-premium and dual-wage note.
What should I bring when I call about specialty trade contractors insurance?
Bring your entity details, CSLB classification(s), payroll by class, work mix (TI vs new construction vs service), vehicle list, approximate tool or equipment values, and any GC insurance exhibit or COI rejection note.
