Plumbing Contractors Insurance

Plumbing contractors nationwide get asked for certificates that match the subcontract — not a generic ACORD that forgets additional insured or completed operations. Lions & Coventry Insurance Services places plumbing contractors insurance across the U.S. Brokerage notes below — not a quote and not legal advice.

Coverages plumbing contractors usually need on the bid

  • General liability with additional insured and primary/noncontributory wording GCs actually endorse
  • Workers compensation with class codes that match plumbing work — misclassification shows up at audit
  • Commercial auto for service vans and crew vehicles
  • Inland marine / tools for scheduled equipment that leaves the truck
  • Contractor license bond (in California, for example, the CSLB contractor license bond is $25,000) — a bond is not GL

Certificates and CG 20 10 / CG 20 37 (plain English)

A COI is evidence of insurance on a date. Owners and GCs often also require endorsements. In broad educational terms, CG 20 10 is often associated with ongoing operations; CG 20 37 with completed operations. Edition dates and contract language matter. Send us the exhibit — we match wording the carrier will actually endorse.

What drives your premium

We don’t publish prices because every quote depends on underwriting. These are the main factors carriers weigh:

  • Your trade, license class and the type of work (residential, commercial, new construction or remodel)
  • Payroll, subcontractor costs and revenue
  • Claims history and, for workers’ comp, your experience modification
  • Limits, deductibles and contract requirements such as additional insured or waiver of subrogation
  • The states where you work, since rules and loss costs vary

How to get a plumbing contractors insurance quote

Five steps to prepare a plumbing contractor insurance submission for work anywhere in the U.S. This is brokerage guidance from Lions & Coventry Insurance Services, not legal advice and not a premium quote.

  1. Describe the plumbing work you do — List your services, such as service and repair, remodel, new construction rough-in and finish, drain and sewer work, water heaters, gas piping and backflow testing. Note your mix of residential and commercial work and the states where you work. Water damage and gas line exposures shape how carriers underwrite plumbers.
  2. Separate payroll from subcontractor costs — Have annual payroll for your own employees ready, separate from what you pay subcontractors, and collect a current certificate of insurance from every subcontractor. Accurate payroll and class codes matter at the workers compensation audit.
  3. List your vehicles, tools and equipment — Schedule your service vans and trucks, and the tools and equipment you want insured, such as drain machines, camera inspection gear and pipe threaders. Equipment that leaves the truck usually belongs on an inland marine or tools floater.
  4. Gather contract requirements and loss runs — Pull the insurance sections of your subcontracts and service agreements, including any additional insured, primary and noncontributory and waiver of subrogation wording, and request loss runs from your current or prior carriers.
  5. Send the submission to a licensed broker — Share the facts above with us. We compare available markets for liability, workers compensation, commercial auto, tools and umbrella, and explain whether a placement is admitted or surplus lines. We do not quote a premium before underwriting reviews the risk.

Plumbing contractors FAQ

Is the CSLB bond the same as liability insurance?

No. The contractor license bond is a surety obligation tied to licensing. General liability is separate insurance. Most GCs require both bond status and GL evidence.

Do plumbers need workers compensation?

Workers compensation requirements vary by state. In California, for example, it is a core compliance and bid requirement for most contractors with employees. Class codes and payroll accuracy matter at audit. See our September 2026 WCIRB note for the California example.

Can Lions & Coventry issue same-day certificates?

When the policy already supports the requested wording, we treat a GC holding payment over a cert as a same-day problem when possible. New endorsements still need carrier turnaround.
