Quick answer: Flooring contractors usually need general liability, workers' compensation, commercial auto and tool coverage. If you sell the materials you install, products liability matters too, and retailer installer programs and general contractors often set specific limits and additional insured requirements.

Lions & Coventry Insurance Services, established in 2009 and licensed in all 50 states (CA Lic. #0G22084), places flooring contractors insurance nationwide. We work with hardwood, tile, carpet, vinyl and laminate installers, refinishers and commercial flooring contractors.

Coverages flooring contractors usually need

  • General liability for damage to a client's cabinets, walls or plumbing during installation, and for slip-and-fall claims after the job.
  • Products and completed operations, especially if you sell flooring, adhesives or underlayment as well as installing it.
  • Workers' compensation for knee and back injuries, cuts from saws and exposure to dust and adhesives.
  • Commercial auto for vans and trucks that carry material, tools and crews.
  • Tools and installation floater for saws, sanders and material in transit or stored on a job site before it is installed.

Installation, moisture and workmanship

Many flooring disputes start with moisture, subfloor problems or adhesive failure. General liability usually responds to damage your work causes to other property, not to the cost of replacing your own flooring if it cups, cracks or delaminates. Knowing that difference helps you write clearer contracts and decide when to document moisture readings and subfloor conditions before you install.

Retailer installer programs and commercial jobs

Home improvement retailers, flooring stores and general contractors often set minimum limits, require additional insured status and ask for workers' compensation, even for small installers. We can review their requirements and issue certificates that match.

What drives your premium

We don't publish prices because every quote depends on underwriting. These are the main factors carriers weigh:

  • Floor types and whether you refinish, sand or install only
  • Whether you sell materials as well as install them
  • Residential, commercial and retailer program work
  • Payroll and subcontractor costs
  • Claims history and contract requirements

How to get a flooring contractors insurance quote

Five steps to prepare a flooring contractor insurance submission for work anywhere in the U.S. This is brokerage guidance from Lions & Coventry Insurance Services, not legal advice and not a premium quote.

  1. List the floor types and services you offer — Write down every flooring type you install, such as hardwood, tile, carpet, vinyl and laminate, and whether you also sand, refinish, level subfloors or remove old flooring. Note the states where you work and your mix of residential, commercial and retailer program jobs.
  2. Say whether you sell the materials you install — If you sell flooring, adhesives or underlayment as well as installing them, tell the carrier. Material sales add products liability exposure, and some policies treat sales and installation differently.
  3. Gather payroll, subcontract, vehicle and tool details — Have annual payroll, subcontractor costs and revenue estimates ready, along with a list of vans and trucks and the saws, sanders and other equipment you want insured. Include material you store or carry before it is installed.
  4. Pull loss runs and contract requirements — Request loss runs from your current or prior carriers and collect the insurance requirements from retailers, flooring stores and general contractors you work for. Many set minimum limits, require additional insured status and ask for proof of workers compensation.
  5. Send the submission to a licensed broker — Share the facts above with us. We compare available markets, explain whether a placement is admitted or surplus lines, and issue certificates that match each program’s requirements once coverage is bound. We do not quote a premium before underwriting reviews the risk.

Flooring Contractors insurance FAQ

Does general liability cover a floor I installed that fails?

Usually not the cost of replacing your own work. General liability is designed for damage to other property and for injuries. If a failed floor damages something else, such as a client's cabinets, that resulting damage may be covered, depending on your policy.

Do I need products liability if I only install flooring?

Your general liability policy typically includes products and completed operations coverage. It matters more if you also sell materials, because you can be named in a claim about a product you supplied. Tell us whether you sell, supply or only install.

What do retailer installer programs require?

It depends on the retailer. Most ask for general liability, commercial auto and workers' compensation at set limits, plus additional insured status. Send us the program's insurance requirements and we will check them against your policy.

Is flooring material covered before it is installed?

Not under general liability. Material stored at a job site or in transit can be covered by an installation floater or inland marine policy until it is installed.

How much does flooring contractor insurance cost?

We don't publish prices, because every flooring contractor quote depends on underwriting. Carriers look at the floor types you install, whether you sell materials as well as install them, residential versus commercial work, your payroll and subcontractor costs, your claims history, the limits and endorsements your contracts require, and the states where you work. Request a quote or call (916) 967-7715 and a licensed producer will review your operations and shop the market.

Brokerage guidance, not legal advice. Coverage depends on the policy form, underwriting and carrier availability, and licensing and insurance rules vary by state.
