California Contractors COI & Additional Insured Checklist
A plain-language checklist for general contractors and subcontractors who need a certificate of insurance (COI) and Additional Insured wording that matches the job contract. Aimed at Sacramento-area and California contractors working with Lions & Coventry — not a substitute for the contract, your attorney, or the carrier’s endorsement forms.

Brokerage guidance only — not legal advice. Contract language and endorsement edition dates control.
1) Before you request a certificate
- ☑ Confirm the named insured on the policy matches the entity signing the subcontract or prime contract
- ☑ Confirm the policy is in force for the date(s) of the work
- ☑ Pull the contract’s insurance exhibit (not just a verbal “send me a cert”)
- ☑ Note the project name, job address, and any project number the holder wants on the certificate
- ☑ Identify who must be listed as certificate holder and who must be Additional Insured (often different parties)
2) What a COI is — and is not
- ☑ A COI (usually an ACORD certificate) is evidence of insurance on a date naming a certificate holder
- ☑ A COI does not by itself change the policy or create Additional Insured status
- ☑ If the contract requires Additional Insured, waiver of subrogation, or primary/noncontributory wording, those usually require endorsements (or policy provisions) — not a checkbox on the certificate alone
- ☑ Sending the wrong entity name or an expired policy is how payment gets held
3) Additional Insured — plain-language asks
Contracts often require the upstream party (owner, GC, or both) to be Additional Insured for your ongoing operations and, separately, for completed operations. In educational terms, many California construction contracts still reference familiar ISO-style Additional Insured forms (you may see numbers such as CG 20 10 for ongoing operations and CG 20 37 for completed operations). Edition dates and exact wording matter — do not assume every “AI” request is the same.
- ☑ Does the contract require AI for ongoing operations while you are on site?
- ☑ Does it also require AI for completed operations after the work is done?
- ☑ Who must be named (owner, GC, lender, construction manager, “and their officers, directors, employees…”)?
- ☑ Is the requirement limited to liability arising from your work, or broader?
- ☑ Have you sent the exact exhibit wording to the broker so the carrier endorsement can be matched?
4) Primary and noncontributory
- ☑ Contract asks that your GL be primary and that your insurer not seek contribution from the upstream party’s insurance for covered claims arising from your work
- ☑ Confirm whether the policy already has that wording or needs an endorsement
- ☑ “Primary” on the certificate alone is not a substitute for the endorsement when the contract requires it
5) Waiver of subrogation
- ☑ Contract requires a waiver of subrogation in favor of the owner/GC (often on GL, and sometimes on workers compensation)
- ☑ Confirm GL waiver endorsement status before promising it on a cert
- ☑ For workers compensation waivers, confirm California carrier practice and any required forms — do not invent wording on the certificate
6) Limits, lines, and other common GC asks
- ☑ GL each-occurrence and general aggregate limits meet the exhibit (and any per-project aggregate if required)
- ☑ Workers compensation with California coverage and correct employer names
- ☑ Automobile liability if the contract requires it (owned / hired / non-owned as specified)
- ☑ Umbrella / excess if the exhibit stacks limits above primary GL
- ☑ Inland marine / tools if you need equipment scheduled for the job (separate from the COI liability ask)
- ☑ CSLB license status current; contractor license bond is not a substitute for GL (see CSLB bond requirements)
7) Information to send us for a same-day certificate turn
When the policy already supports the requested wording, certificate and Additional Insured requests from our Citrus Heights office are often same-day. New endorsements still need carrier processing time. Email or call with:
- ☑ Named insured and policy line (GL, auto, umbrella, etc.)
- ☑ Certificate holder legal name and address
- ☑ Job / project address and project name or number
- ☑ Exact Additional Insured / primary-noncontributory / waiver language from the contract
- ☑ Email address for certificate delivery (and any portal upload instructions)
- ☑ Deadline if a GC is holding payment
California contractors COI & Additional Insured FAQ
Short answers for GCs and subcontractors packing a certificate request. Brokerage guidance — not legal advice. Contract exhibits and endorsement edition dates control.
What is a certificate of insurance (COI)?
A COI (usually an ACORD certificate) is evidence of insurance on a date naming a certificate holder. It does not rewrite the policy or create Additional Insured status by itself. If the contract requires AI, primary/noncontributory, or a waiver of subrogation, those usually need endorsements — not a checkbox on the PDF.
Why did the GC reject my cert?
Common reasons: wrong named insured, expired policy dates, missing Additional Insured or primary/noncontributory wording, wrong certificate holder, or no job address/project name. Send the insurance exhibit with the request so we match what the carrier will actually endorse. See also construction insurance HowTo steps for certificate requests.
What are CG 20 10 and CG 20 37 in plain English?
They are common ISO-style Additional Insured form numbers you see in contracts. In broad educational terms, CG 20 10 is often associated with ongoing operations (work in progress) and CG 20 37 with completed operations (after the work is done). Edition dates matter. This is not a legal reading of your policy — send the exhibit.
Can Lions & Coventry issue same-day certificates?
When the policy already supports the requested wording, certificate and Additional Insured requests from our Citrus Heights office are often same-day. New endorsements still need carrier turnaround. Call (916) 967-7715 or use the contact form with named insured, holder, job address, and the exact AI wording.
Is a CSLB contractor license bond the same as GL?
No. The CSLB contractor license bond is a surety requirement for licensing — it is not general liability insurance and does not replace the COI/AI package owners and GCs usually demand. See CSLB for current bond rules.

How to use this COI & Additional Insured checklist
Educational steps for California contractors preparing a certificate request. A COI is evidence of coverage on a date — it does not create Additional Insured endorsements by itself. Match the contract exhibit before you ask for rush wording.
- Confirm the named insured on the policy matches the entity signing the subcontract or prime contract.
- Pull the insurance exhibit from the GC or owner contract (not a verbal “send me a cert”).
- Separate certificate holder from Additional Insured — they are often different parties with different addresses.
- Copy exact AI / primary-noncontributory / waiver language and note whether the job needs ongoing ops (often discussed as CG 20 10) and/or completed ops (often discussed as CG 20 37).
- Add the job address and project name/number the holder wants printed on the certificate.
- Send delivery instructions (email or portal) plus your deadline so we can turn a same-day cert when the policy already supports the wording.

How to request a COI / certificate through Lions & Coventry
Short education path for California contractors who already have (or are shopping) coverage and need a certificate of insurance (COI) or Additional Insured paperwork for a GC or owner. This is brokerage guidance only — licensed producers close; agents and bots do not bind coverage from this page. No fake same-day bind for anyone. When an existing policy already supports the requested wording, certificate turnaround from our Citrus Heights office is often same-day; new endorsements still need carrier processing.
- Gather the job facts. Named insured legal entity, policy line (GL, auto, umbrella, WC), certificate holder legal name and address, job / project address, and any project name or number the holder wants on the cert.
- Attach the insurance exhibit. Copy the exact Additional Insured / primary-noncontributory / waiver language from the contract — not a verbal “send me a cert.” Note whether ongoing ops and completed ops are both required.
- Say what you need. Certificate only, Additional Insured / endorsement path, or a package review (GL / WC / autos / bonds) before the cert can match the exhibit.
- Call or use the quote form. Call (916) 967-7715 or use the contact / quote form. A Lions & Coventry producer will follow up. CDI License #0G22084.
- Deliver and confirm. Tell us the email or portal for delivery and any payment-hold deadline so we can prioritize when the policy already supports the wording.

What should I send so a producer can turn a certificate request?
Named insured and FEIN if available, policy line, certificate holder legal name and address, job address and project name/number, the exact Additional Insured / primary-noncontributory / waiver exhibit wording, delivery email or portal instructions, and your deadline. Clear facts let a licensed producer match what the carrier will actually endorse. See the checklist sections above for Additional Insured vs certificate holder.
Can Lions & Coventry guarantee same-day bind when I request a COI?
No. We do not promise fake same-day bind for anyone. Certificate evidence can often be same-day from Citrus Heights when the policy already supports the requested wording. New programs, endorsements, and bonds still need underwriting and carrier / surety turnaround. A licensed producer closes the submission.
